Artist Statement
Dynamic. Light. Intensity.
Art provokes the spirit
Each painting has a life of its own. It is finished when it is independent of me. The light and dark images evoke our struggles to overcome spiritual darkness. My work is an action to bring about light. I see my role as an artist to invigorate, inspire and illuminate.
Intention leads to the story
My intention is to create work that is truthful and real, that has depth and is compelling from a distance and up close. We live in times of exponential change. Capturing these important times is a significant part of my creative process.
Painting is physical
The works are large high quality Modern Abstracts. Starting with a basic sense of color and composition each layer guides the next until reaching a depth of 30-40 layers. Illumination and radiance are achieved through the deep layering of oils, alkyds, translucent pigments and varnishes or resins. The tools range from pallet knifes to belt sanders to cotton balls, from delicate to industrial. Each painting takes two to four months to complete.
Painting is intimate
I feel an extraordinary commitment to each painting, a dynamic power that moves out into the world. To achieve this I first empty myself of all internal chatter and begin in silence.
Painting is essential to me.
